What causes a goitre?
A goitre is a thyroid gland swelling, forming a noticeable lump at the front of the neck. Women are more susceptible than men, and the likelihood of developing a goitre increases with age.
Potential causes of goitre may include:
- iodine deficiency,
- autoimmune thyroid disorders (such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease),
- multiple lumps or nodules
- inflammation of the thyroid (thyroiditis),
- certain medications as lithium
- Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause
- Swelling of fluid-filled lymph nodes that can enlarge the gland.
Other conditions affecting the thyroid gland may include
Dysfunction of the thyroid gland, be it overactive, underactive, or inflamed
Why book a thyroid scan?
Upon receiving the goitre scan results, you gain the insights needed to make informed decisions about potential treatment requirements. Depending on the ultrasound findings, our team may suggest consulting with your GP or arranging a fine-needle aspiration to confirm any underlying medical issues. This additional procedure would be conducted either at the hospital or your doctor’s office.
