What can be identified by an ultrasound scan of the Testes and Scrotum?
The scrotum is a pouch of skin and muscle that covers each testicle in males. The testicles are male reproductive organs responsible for producing sperm and certain hormones. The scrotum acts as a protective enclosure for the testes, helping to regulate their temperature for optimal sperm development.
A Testes and Scrotum Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure that provides detailed images of the testicles and surrounding structures. Here are key aspects that can be identified through this ultrasound scan:
A Testes and Scrotum Ultrasound is a non-invasive and effective tool for assessing the health of the male reproductive system. It can aid in the diagnosis of various conditions, guide further medical decisions, and contribute to the overall management of reproductive health concerns.
- Testicular Masses or Tumours
- Testicular Blood Flow
- Epididymis (coiled tube located on the back of each testicle) health
- Hydrocele (fluid-filled sac around the testicle, causing scrotal swelling)
- Varicocele (large veins in the scrotum)
- Testicular size and shape
- Inguinal hernia (Abdominal organs protrude via a weak area in the groin muscles, forming a visible bulge.)

In Case You Still Have Questions
Can I eat and drink before my scan?
Generally, there are no dietary restrictions before your scrotal and testicular ultrasound scan. You can eat and drink normally. However, please follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider or imaging centre. If you have any specific concerns, please contact your healthcare team for personalised guidance.
Who will perform the ultrasound?
Trained ultrasound technologists or sonographers will perform your ultrasound scan. The sonographer will apply a gel on the skin over the area being examined and use a handheld device called a transducer to capture images of the scrotum and testicles These images are then interpreted by a radiologist, who is a medical doctor specialising in this area, or by your healthcare provider who requested the scan.
What do I need to wear for the scan?
Please wear loose fitting clothes that can be easily removed if required. If you are unprepared, we may request you to change into a robe.
What do I need to bring to my ultrasound?
In order to help our sonographers if a referral is needed, kindly bring your hospital documents and reports, if you have these.
Will you let me know if there are any anomalies?
Note that none of your NHS scans are replaced by our scans. Should a medical referral be necessary during your visit, we will address this with you and give you a comprehensive report to take, for your physician or specialist.
If I have a scan with you, do I still need to go to the NHS?
Indeed, our services constitute an adjunct to the National Health Service (NHS).
What is the referral process like?
Prior to your scan, please kindly inform your GP or healthcare provider about your intention to undergo a scan with us. Upon arrival at Ultrasound Digital, you will be asked to complete a registration form, that will include your GP’s details. If your testicular and scrotal scan results suggest further communication or information sharing is necessary, it is your responsibility to provide the report to your general practitioner.
