Abdominal Ultrasound For Abdominal Pain and other causes
An in-depth examination of the upper abdomen with ultrasound involves a thorough assessment of the size, characteristics, and shape of your kidneys, liver, gall bladder, spleen, biliary systems, and pancreas.
If you are suffering from abdominal (belly) pain, bloating, or discomfort, having an upper abdomen scan is recommended. This scan can help us find a cause for your pain as gallstones, kidney stones, liver disease, polyps, pancreatitis, inflammation, and abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Available for patients aged 18 and above, fasting for a minimum of 6 hours before the scan is required, and only clear fluids permitted. We advise drinking at least one litre of water before the scan to maintain a full bladder. This helps our sonographers to get clearer images during your abdominal ultrasound.
What does an upper abdomen ultrasound include?
Abdomen ultrasound includes:
- Detailed report and images
- 20 minute appointment
- Professional sonographer
- Treatment recommendations

In Case You Still Have Questions
Can I eat and drink before my scan?
Fasting for a minimum of 6 hours before the scan is required, and only clear fluids permitted. We advise drinking at least one litre of water before the scan to maintain a full bladder. This helps the sonographer to get clear images.
Who will perform the ultrasound?
Your scan will be done by our expert sonographers, who are accredited by the Health Professional Council, The General Medical Council, or Society of Radiographers. They also contribute to the NHS alongside their roles at Ultrasound Digital.
What do I need to wear for the scan?
We suggest dressing in loose comfortable clothing. If not, you might have to put on a robe.
What do I need to bring to my ultrasound?
Kindly bring copies of any prior scan results, blood test reports, or other pertinent documents if available.
Will you advise me of any abnormalities?
Note that none of your NHS scans are replaced by our scans. Should a medical referral be necessary during your visit, we will address this with you and give you a comprehensive report to take to your GP.
If I have a scan with you, do I still need to go to the NHS?
Indeed, our services constitute an adjunct to the National Health Service (NHS).
What is the referral process like?
We recommend that every one of our clients let their doctor or other healthcare provider know that they plan to get scanned by us. When you arrive to Ultrasound Digital, we will ask you to fill out a registration form.
We will specifically ask for the details of your doctor or healthcare provider. Should the results of your scan indicate that you should get in touch with someone we advise you contact your GP or healthcare provider immediately.
