A thorough ultrasound scan and an anomaly scan

An anomaly scan, performed between 19 and 24 weeks of pregnancy, is a detailed ultrasound examination aimed at identifying any potential problems with the unborn child’s development. This thorough scan focuses on assessing the baby’s skull, bones, developing organs and overall body, to detect any anomalies or abnormalities. The results provide valuable information about the health of the amniotic fluid, the umbilical cord, and the fetus’s development. Additionally, it serves to confirm the baby’s growth, heart rate, and any possible explanations for any unexpected findings.

What is included in an anomaly scan?

  • A thorough report on anomaly assessment
  • Free 4-D sneak peek (may be used for up to 22 weeks)
  • Verification of complementary gender upon request
  • If precise measurements cannot be obtained, rescan for free.
  • All ages welcome; 30-minute appointment; no need for a doctor’s referral

Are You Interested in a Mid-Pregnancy Scan?

From 19 weeks of pregnancy onward, you can have a private anomaly scan, which is intended to examine your developing baby’s physical development in great detail and to check for any anomalies. The NHS usually offers this scan as your 20-week scan.

Your developing baby’s anatomical structures will be the focus of our in-depth abnormality scan. Analyses of the kidneys, limbs, spine, heart, and chest, stomach, and head are included in this. During your anomaly scan, four measurements will be obtained: the bipareital diameter (BPD), femur length (FL), head circumference (HC), and abdomen circumference (AC). All of these will rely on how your baby is lying. Your sonographer’s comprehensive scan report will include everything they find. In most cases, the scan indicates that the baby’s development is on track. However, there are occasions when the sonographer may detect or suspect something unusual. In that case we will explain clearly the next steps.

Ultrasound Digital will identify most physical anomalies of your unborn baby, carried out by a certified sonographer with substantial obstetric scanning experience. It is advised that you notify your consultant of any findings from this scan.

What does an anomaly scan aim to achieve?

How is the scan done

During the procedure, you will lie on a couch, exposing your abdomen by lowering your skirt or trousers and lifting your top. Tissue paper is used to protect your clothing from the ultrasound gel applied to your tummy.

The sonographer uses a handheld probe, over your belly to examine the baby’s body, producing a black and white image on the computer screen. Although the scan is not painful, slight pressure may be applied for better views, which could be uncomfortable.

To maintain a good view, the sonographer adjusts the screen’s position, and sometimes may need to concentrate in silence.

Challenges may arise if the baby is in an awkward position, moving a lot, or if you have above-average weight or dense body tissue, but these difficulties can be overcome with various techniques.

Occasionally, you may need a full bladder for the appointment, and we will inform you beforehand. If unsure, feel free to contact us.

What happens if an anomaly is detected on scan

If an anomaly is detected during a scan, it does not necessarily mean that there is a serious issue. However, it does warrant further investigation and discussion with your healthcare provider. The steps taken may include:

Further Testing: Additional tests, such as more detailed ultrasound scans, blood tests, or genetic testing, may be recommended to gather more information about the anomaly.

Consultation with Specialists: You may be referred to a specialist, such as a fetal medicine specialist or a genetic counselor, who can provide more in-depth analysis and guidance.

Discussion with the Healthcare Team: We can discuss the findings with you, explaining the nature of the anomaly, potential implications, and available options for further evaluation or management.

Emotional Support: Receiving news of a potential anomaly can be emotionally challenging. We provide emotional support and counseling to help you cope with the situation.

Decision-Making: Based on the information gathered, you and your Specialist will make decisions about the best course of action, taking into consideration your values, preferences, and the well-being of both you and your baby.

It is important to remember that anomalies can range from minor to more significant, and advances in medical technology have provided healthcare professionals with better tools for diagnosis and intervention. Seeking timely and comprehensive medical advice is crucial in understanding and addressing any concerns raised by the anomaly scan.
