Ultrasound Digital offers cervical assessment services, to measure the length of the neck of your womb (cervix) and predict/prevent preterm births. Contact our sonographer team for assistance. Note: This ultrasound is for expectant mothers at 14-34 weeks of pregnancy. Measuring your cervical length, can help us detect and/ or forecast premature births.
Cervical length measurements using ultrasound scan
During your pregnancy your specialist may need you to have a cervical length scan. This is usually done using the transvaginal probe.
This may be required if you are expecting twins, or have had any previous operations on your cervix, or if you have had a late miscarriage or a premature baby or if your waters have broken prematurely before birth.
Normally your cervix remains closed during pregnancy and it opens just before or during your birth.
If your cervix opens up earlier than this, it may indicate that you may have a premature birth.
A cervical length scan can check the length of your cervix, and if it is longer than the typical >25mm, it may indicate premature labour. Additionally, it can check the position of any cervical stitch if you have had this inserted and can check for any dilatation of your cervix ie how much your cervix has opened up.
If you are carrying twins, it matters how long your cervix is.
Although a transvaginal ultrasound may seem frightening, we can assure you that it will not hurt and that the transducer is specifically made for this kind of examination.
