A dating ultrasound scan
What happens during a dating scan?
During a dating scan:
Preparation: You may be asked to have a full bladder to improve the visibility of the womb.
Positioning: You will lie on an examination table, and the healthcare professional will apply a gel on your abdomen.
Transabdominal Scan: A handheld device called a transducer is moved over your abdomen. Sound waves are emitted, and the echoes create an image of the uterus, gestation sac, and fetus, on a monitor.
Measurements: The crown-rump length (CRL) is measured, providing an estimation of the gestational age of the unborn baby. The gestation sac is also assessed for additional information.
Fetal Heartbeat: An attempt is made to detect the fetal heartbeat.
Visual Confirmation: Expectant parents may see the developing fetus on the screen, providing an early visual connection.
Qualified sonographers with extensive prenatal scanning experience conduct all of our scans.
To obtain the finest possible image of your baby’s body, your sonographer will gently press on your abdomen. The majority of scans go well, so you may relax. However, some babies prefer to lie in an odd position, so it may be difficult to get a good picture.
The procedure is generally safe and routine, offering important information about the progress of your pregnancy.
What's included in a dating scan?
- A report on dating and evaluation
- In a mounted card frame, two two-dimensional black-and-white photos
- No cost 4D sneak peek (available for 12 to 22 weeks)
- If views are unclear, a transvaginal or internal scan could be performed.
- 15-minute scheduled time
- No GP referral is necessary.
What does a dating scan aim to achieve?
One use for private dating scans is to confirm the gestational age of the fetus. It will be determined by taking measurements of the crown-rump length (CRL) whether you are carrying one or more children. Recall that you must arrive at all ultrasound scan visits with a full bladder if this is your first scan!
