Experience the precision of transrectal ultrasound, a technique that captures clear images of men’s prostate gland and surrounding tissues What is the prostate gland The prostate gland is a small, almond-sized organ near the bladder, in front of the rectum, in men. It helps with reproduction by producing a fluid that supports and carries sperm.

What can be identified by an ultrasound scan of the Prostate?

A Prostate Ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool that provides detailed images of the prostate gland. Here are some important features that can be identified during a prostate ultrasound scan:
  • The size and shape of the gland
  • Any nodules or tumours( lumps or bumps) in the gland
  • Cysts or Abscesses (fluid-filled sacs or pockets of infection) in the gland
  • Calculi (Prostate Stones)
  • Blood Flow in the gland
  • Obstruction of urine flow
  • Assist whilst taking any biopsy of the gland
While prostate ultrasound provides valuable insights, it is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods, such as blood tests (PSA or prostate specific antigen levels) and digital rectal examinations, for a comprehensive assessment of the health of the prostate gland. The results of this scan assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing and managing various conditions, affecting the prostate gland.

What is Noninvasive prostate ultrasound

Non-invasive Prostate Ultrasound is a painless imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the prostate gland without the need for any invasive measures. This approach allows for a comprehensive examination of the prostate’s size, shape, and internal structures, helping in the detection of nodules, tumors, or other abnormalities. Invasive-free Prostate Ultrasound is commonly used for diagnostic purposes.

How long does an ultrasound scan on the Prostate take?

The duration of a Prostate Ultrasound can vary but is generally a relatively quick procedure. On average, a Prostate Ultrasound typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes. The exact time may depend on factors such as the complexity of the examination, the need for additional views or measurements, and individual patient considerations. It’s generally a well-tolerated procedure.

What can I expect on the day of the scan?

During a transrectal ultrasound, the imaging probe is placed as close to the prostate gland as possible. You will be requested to lie on your side with bent knees. A disposable cover is placed over the lubricated ultrasound transducer, which is then inserted gently, through your back passage.

Images are taken from different angles to get an optimal view of your prostate gland. If a suspicious area is seen, an ultrasound-guided biopsy may be needed. This involves inserting a needle into the prostate to get a small tissue sample for microscopic examination, in the laboratory. Transrectal ultrasound may cause minimal discomfort. This is more so, during a biopsy needle insertion. However, back passage wall is often insensitive to pain in the prostate region. Discomfort is low, and any added time needed for a biopsy is minimal.

Occasionally, there may be a slight blood in your sperm or urine after the biopsy. You may continue with normal activities immediately after your scan.

Who can have a Prostate scan?

Anyone above the age of 18 is eligible.

While not necessary, it is advised that you let your general practitioner (GP) know you plan to attend a private ultrasound scan and share your scan results afterwards.

In Case You Still Have Questions

Generally, there are no dietary restrictions before your prostate ultrasound scan. You can eat and drink normally. However, please follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider or imaging centre. If you have any specific concerns, please contact your healthcare team for personalised guidance.

Trained ultrasound technologists or sonographers will perform your prostate ultrasound scan. The sonographer will apply a gel on the skin over the area being examined and use a handheld device called a transducer to capture images of the prostate gland. If a transrectal scan is needed,  a probe cover and gel on top of the probe is used. These images are then interpreted by a radiologist, who is a medical doctor specialising in this area, or by the healthcare provider who requested the test.

Please wear loose fitting clothes that can be easily removed if required. If you are unprepared, we may request you to change into a robe.

In order to help our sonographers if a referral is needed, kindly bring your hospital documents and reports, if you have these.

Note that none of your NHS scans are replaced by our scans. Should a medical referral be necessary during your visit, we will address this with you and give you a comprehensive report to take, for your physician or specialist.

Indeed, our services constitute an adjunct to the National Health Service (NHS).

Prior to your scan, please kindly inform your GP or healthcare provider about your intention to undergo a scan with us. Upon arrival at Ultrasound Digital, you will be asked to complete a registration form, that will include your GP’s details. If your kidney, ureters, and bladder scan results suggest further communication or information sharing is necessary, it is your responsibility to provide the report to your general practitioner.
