What is included in an early pregnancy scan?

Viability scans, often referred to as early pregnancy reassurance scans, are performed between 5 to 8 weeks gestation.

These scans confirm the presence of a pregnancy, assess gestational age, and check the health of the developing embryo.

They are particularly helpful in providing expectant parents with reassurance about the well-being of the pregnancy, and they may also yield an estimated due date. Viability scans are a valuable tool for early detection and monitoring during the initial stages of pregnancy They may be recommended for uncertain dates, a history of miscarriage, pain/bleeding, fertility treatments, or to provide reassurance in early pregnancy.

You will need a referral from a Specialist for an early pregnancy scan.

What is included in our ultrasound scan for an early pregnancy?

  • If views are unclear, a transvaginal or internal scan could be performed.
  • 20-minute scheduled time
  • No GP referral is necessary.

Have you recently discovered that you are pregnant?

Early pregnancy ultrasound scans are typically performed transvaginally in the first trimester (up to 12 weeks). A small, lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina to obtain clear images of the uterus and developing embryo.

They provide accurate information about gestational age, viability, and early pregnancy conditions.

The ultrasound includes measuring the crown-rump length and gestation sac (if visible).

The crown-rump length (CRL) is the measurement from the top of the baby’s head (crown) to the bottom of the spine (rump).

The gestation sac is a fluid-filled structure in the uterus inside which is the developing embryo.

We will aytempt to detect your unborn baby’s heartbeat at around six and a half weeks. Note: An additional charge will apply for multiple pregnancies.

For best results, you need to have a full bladder at the time of the scan. Our medical staff is available to respond to any queries you may have. Make an appointment for your early pregnancy scan right now, and let Ultrasound Digital support you as you approach parenthood.
